Our team bios have a lot of great things to say about the folks at Arterra, but we thought it would be fun to hear about them and the projects they work on from their own perspective. Kicking off our Employee Spotlight is Sophia Rogers, one of our amazing designers.

How has your career grown since joining Arterra?
This is my first job as a designer, I've grown immensely in the last two years. I feel lucky to be taking my theoretical knowledge into the real world with help from the Arterra team. They care a lot about my growth and are all extremely talented designers themselves. I'm learning from the best!

What motivates you?
I'm motivated to create something timeless. I want to create spaces that are comfortable, usable, and beautiful.

What or who inspired you to pursue a career in landscape architecture?
I had a teacher at The University of Oregon who was a strict nativist. He pushed us to see that a landscape architect's role is to manipulate the built environment in a way that accounts for all the species that rely on it. I still find that philosophy inspiring and try to consider all pieces of the ecological puzzle when making design decisions.

What has been your favorite project so far?
It's really hard to choose. I think each project offers something unique and special. I love the days spent on-site placing plants and seeing the design vision become a reality.

What was your favorite number and why?
I don't have a favorite number! I prefer whole numbers because they're easy to work with. No one asked but my favorite tree is Aesculus Californica and my favorite color is mustard yellow.
