Employee Spotlight: Loretta Drummond

What is your favorite part of working in landscape architecture?
I’ve become more sure of myself in how I approach design and interact with others. Deep down I’m just a shy kid, but I’ve become confident in my expertise and abilities obtained through rigorous practice. I’ve also learned much more about the permitting processes in various jurisdictions and how to effectively collaborate with other consultants to get the best result possible.

What motivates you?
I’m motivated by the idea of leaving things better than I found them — creating something lasting that is both beautiful and can bring a little more ease and joy into the world. I also have a strong curiosity and desire to solve problems, so I’m rarely bored!

What inspired you to pursue a career in landscape architecture?
I didn’t know what landscape architecture was until I signed up for a plant identification class on a whim. I learned so much through the Ornamental Horticulture Department at Orange Coast College, which really laid the foundation for my interest in designing outdoor spaces. Rick Harlow and John Lenanton taught me so much while my friend Terese Hall helped motivate me to continue my schooling and earn a BLA at Cal Poly.

What's something you're excited to be working on?
I’m excited about the conceptual design of a modern home in a beautiful woodland setting. I’m hopeful that we can tackle the invasive species onsite and restore these areas to a more native plant palette that is less fire prone and part of a healthier ecosystem.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Years ago I worked for Habitat for Humanity and am very proud of a Women Build project I supervised from groundbreaking to completion. I couldn’t have asked for a more deserving family to build a home for. I also loved being able to help women learn new skills and realize they are more capable than they originally believed.
