Rural Retreat

Portola Valley is a community that honors its past and draws families of Silicon Valley to this small town, a rural setting that strives to preserve the natural beauty and open space. The straightforward character of the house and site design is a direct reference to this heritage. Understanding this community context was key to designing the property.

Originally an equestrian lot, the redesign of the property presented an opportunity to restore the land while creating a home for a family of five. We designed different activity areas that included a pool, kitchen garden, orchard, and discovery trails. Grading, drainage, and surface water management concerns were mitigated with lawn terraces were graded to not only provide areas for underground water detention but also create a pasture like setting for play and entertaining. The design of the arrival court creates a sense of entry while accommodating a play court for the kids and the required fire truck access and turnaround. A bosque of crape myrtle trees provides additional interest throughout the seasons.
